Getting Polish Right

Names that change by gender. A father "Kowalski," a mother and daughter "Kowalska" — to a US officer these can look like different families. We reproduce every name exactly as written, follow passport spellings, and add a translator's note explaining Polish name forms where it helps.

Every Polish letter. ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź, and ż are kept as in the source, with passport spellings noted on request (Łukasz / Lukasz), so your file stays consistent.

The right document version. Polish civil registry offices issue abridged (odpis skrócony) and full (odpis zupełny) copies and multilingual extracts. We'll tell you what we see on your document; check your case requirements for which version to submit.

The right kind of certification. For US purposes we provide a signed certified translation. For official use in Poland, authorities usually require a sworn translation by a tłumacz przysięgły — see below.

The right tone. Formal Polish uses Pan / Pani / Państwo; many consumer brands now use informal "ty." We set the register with you before we start.

English to Polish Translation for Use in Poland

Many Polish Americans and Polish citizens abroad need English documents accepted in Poland — to register a US birth or marriage with a Polish civil registry office (transkrypcja), to confirm Polish citizenship through Polish ancestry, to inherit or sell property, or to marry in Poland.

We translate birth, marriage, divorce, death, and naturalization certificates, name change orders, powers of attorney, and court documents into Polish.

Before you order: Polish authorities usually require a sworn translation (tłumaczenie przysięgłe) by a translator on the Ministry of Justice list, and often an apostille on the original. Requirements differ by office and consulate — confirm with the office handling your case, and we'll prepare the translation to fit.

Polish Genealogy: Records in Polish, Latin, Russian, and German

Polish family history is written in more than one language. Depending on the region and period, parish and civil records may be in:

  • Latin — common in older Catholic parish registers
  • Polish
  • Russian — in the former Russian partition, especially from the later 19th century
  • German — in the former Prussian and Austrian partitions

We translate birth, marriage, and death entries, parish registers, emigration and military records, and letters — including handwritten entries — for family research, citizenship confirmation, and inheritance cases. Send a clear scan and we'll quote based on length and legibility.
