Why Technical Translation Requires Domain Expertise — Not Just Language Skills

What is Technical Translation?

Safety-critical instructions: A maintenance procedure that specifies the wrong torque value, a safety interlock described with the wrong sequence, or a chemical hazard class mistranslated — each of these has direct workplace safety consequences. Technical Translation for Regulatory Compliance

CE Marking (EU — all product directives). Products sold in EU markets must be accompanied by documentation in the official language(s) of each member state. Under the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC), instructions for use must be in the language of the country of use before a machine is placed on the market. From 20 January 2027, the Machinery Directive is replaced by the EU Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230. Instructions must still be in a language users in the country of use can easily understand, and they may be supplied in digital format, with a paper copy available on request. Under the EU Medical Device Regulation (2017/745), instructions for use and labeling must be in all official languages of member states where the device is made available.

How to Plan a Technical Translation Project in 5 Steps

1. List what needs translating. Note every document, its file format, the target markets and the deadline. Collect reference material: existing glossaries, earlier translations, product descriptions and photos.
2. Decide what your team can handle. Speaking a language isn’t enough for technical content. One wrong term in a maintenance manual can damage equipment or a customer relationship. Your team is usually best placed to review a translation, not to produce it.
